Margaret Morphew – Musical Director
As a girl, Margaret was a member of the Ipswich Co-op Juniors and then the Ipswich Girls’ Choir. They broadcast on many BBC programmes and competed in local and national music festivals. She was a soloist for many choral societies.
A founder member of the Ipswich Operatic Society, and toured in panto and theatres until she joined her husband in Africa. During her time in Africa, Margaret trained choirs in both Tanzania and Nigeria, and broadcast on TV. She assisted in the forming of the Northern Nigeria Music Festival.
On Margaret’s return from Africa she rejoined the Ipswich Operatic Society as chorus mistress, and performed over 30 leading roles for them. She also performed in The Gilbert and Sullivan Society, and Gallery Players.
She returned to her roots when she became vocal coach to the Co-op Juniors, and has been musical director for the ladies choir for over 20 years.
Joe Cleary - Accompanist/Arranger
Joe has played piano since a child. After lessons in the late 1950’s he began playing the pop music of the 1960’s. In the 1970’s he played for annual pantomimes at work, which were performed for children of the staff. In the 1980’s he moved on to play for BATS (Brantham Amateur Theatrical Society) and in 1990’s for The Debenham Players.
Also in the 1990’s he worked with The Appeal Theatre Company and moved in 1998 to accompany Ipswich Operatic & Dramatic Society (IODS). At IODS he met the inspirational Pat Taplin who took him on to accompany the Gallery Players’ shows. He has been Musical Director for many Gallery Shows, and has played keyboard in the orchestra pit for most of the players musical shows since 1998.
Whilst working with the Gallery Players Joe was introduced to Margaret Morphew. When the position of accompanist for The Co-op Ladies’ Choir became vacant, Margaret asked him to play for the choir, and he joined them in September 2003.
Joe has played for many shows with different local organisations. Joe also plays in the band "Horizon" which performs a show based on the story of Karen Carpenter and using dialogue and music from the Carpenters. Joe also arranges music for the ladies’ choir – including selections from Abba, My Fair Lady, South Pacific, West Side Story and a selection of Theme songs from Bond films
